April 3, 1867 - August 12, 1875
Reverend Alexander Martin was formally inaugurated as the first President of the West Virginia Agricultural College on June 27, 1867.
On January 24, 1868, Martin wrote to West Virginia Governor Arthur I. Boreman requesting a name change for the new college. The Legislature passed an act on December 4, 1868, renaming the institution West Virginia University.
